Smyth County Schools Summer School Program is May 31-June 16

The K-8 summer school will be an intensive thirteen day program starting Tuesday, May 31st, 2022 and ending Thursday, June 16th, 2022. Students will attend from 8:00 a.m.-12 p.m. each day. Some limited bus transportation will be provided.* Language arts, science, social studies and mathematics will be emphasized along with other SOL related subjects. It is our intent to assist your child to learn specific skills in targeted areas that will help them be more successful next school year.
Please complete and return the attached form if you wish for your child to participate in the MES Summer Camp.

Kindergarten Jump Start Summer Camp

Kindergarten Jump Start Summer Camp, sponsored by Smyth County Schools and United Way, is open to Rising Kindergarten students in Smyth County. The program runs May 31- June 13, from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Breakfast and Lunch will be served daily and transportation will be provided. Spots are limited. Spring Holiday

Smyth County Schools will dismiss 2 hours early on Wednesday, April 13 for Spring Holiday. Schools will be closed Thursday, April 14, Friday, April 15, and Monday, April 18. Students return to school on Tuesday, April 19.

Yearbook Orders may be placed through April 16

Place your order for this year's MES yearbook before the fast-approaching deadline of April 16, 2022! Yearbooks can be ordered through the school by sending a check for $35.00 made payable to Marion Elementary School, with Yearbook written in the memo line.
If you prefer, you can order online, however, the deadline is the same date, and there is a $3.99 service charge from the company. Visit and use The School Code: 14064 to place your online yearbook order for $38.99.

Spring Book Fair

MES will have a Scholastic book fair set up in the library during the week of May 15-May 18. You can preview books or shop online by clicking the links in this article. Families can shop the book fair online through March 27, 2022.

Parent Teacher Conferences - March 24 - 1:30-6:30

Smyth County Schools have set the date for Parent-Teacher Conference Night to be held on March 24, 2022, from 1:30 pm - 6:30 pm. Schools will dismiss 2 hours early on this date. Conferences will be both in-person and virtual. Information will be sent home with students in order for parents/guardians to sign up for a conference.

Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration

Smyth County Schools will be having PreK and Kindergarten registration on March 9, 2022, and March 10, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. each day.  Please see the attached file for locations and the required documentation. Click this news heading for more information.

Smyth County Spelling Bee

The Smyth County Spelling Bee was held at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 3, at The Lincoln Theater in Marion, VA. Each Smyth County Elementary and Middle school spelling bee winner was eligible to compete.
Congratulations to Allyson Guttierez, a Chilhowie Middle School student, for winning the contest and being named the Smyth County Spelling Bee Champion.

National School Counseling Week 2022 - Thank you to Mrs. Kay Richardson

National School Counseling Week 2022, “School Counseling: Better Together,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 7–11, 2022, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who “implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.”
